Protecting Octopuses in Italy for the Mediterranean Monk Seals

Sea Shepherd Italy is working with the Arcipelago Toscano National Park and the Guardia di Finanza of Tuscany to protect the Tuscan coastline from illegal fishing activities onboard the M/Y Sea Eagle. The Mediterranean Monk Seal is slowly returning to Italy’s shores, but one of the biggest challenges is scarcity of food. Half of the Monk Seal diet consists of octopuses, which are overfished in this part of Italy, often illegally. Sea Shepherd aims to stop illegal fishing during the biological rest period and fight against unsustainable overfishing, to help in the return of the Monk Seal to Italy.
