How did Animal Save Movement start? | Powerful story

Animal Save Movement started in December 2010 with the inception of Toronto Pig Save as an animal rights, vegan, grassroots group with the adoption of Mr. Bean, a dog. Co-founder Anita Krajnc would take a daily morning walk with Mr. Bean, on Lake Shore Boulevard and would see several transport trucks carrying sad and frightened pigs to a nearby downtown slaughterhouse called Quality Meat Packers (QMP).

In July 2011, we committed to holding a minimum of three vigils each week to bear witness to farmed animals transported to Toronto area slaughterhouses. QMP has since gone bankrupt in 2014 and we now hold weekly Pig Save vigils at Fearmans “Pork” Inc. slaughterhouse in Burlington.

Animal Save Movement uses the strategy of bearing witness to animals in need outside slaughterhouses. We use a love-based community-organizing approach informed by Leo Tolstoy and Mahatma Gandhi. We develop expanding team leadership in order to build an animal justice grassroots movement.

Our demands are to replace animal agriculture, fields used for feed crops and slaughterhouses with wild spaces, forests and animal sanctuaries.

Today, there around 900 Save groups worldwide. For a list of Save groups and social media, visit our website:
