This piggery, owned by Phil and Belinda Wilson, is a farrow to finish piggery located in Victoria’s north-west.

Inside the sheds of the Wondaphil Pork Company piggery, investigators found trapped mothers with chunks cut out of their ears for identification.

In the pork industry, sows are confined to these small cages for six weeks at a time as they give birth and nurse their piglets. Unable to move away from their piglets, injuries to their teats, as well as pressure sores from the bars, are common.

Investigators also found extremely crowded pens of weaner piglets, and a pile of deceased piglets piled together in one of the sheds – some of their remains showing signs of predation.

Their deaths likely did not mean much to the owners of the piggery, their discarded bodies seen only as lost units of production.
