Noi ci affezioniamo molto a cani, gatti e cavalli, ci prendiamo cura di loro e quando muoiono viviamo un autentico lutto. Ma ai maiali, ai vitelli, alle galline riserviamo un trattamento brutale, di sfruttamento, lontano da qualsiasi forma di affetto, essendo essi parte di un sistema produttivo, il cui unico scopo è produrre la maggior quantità di cibo al minor costo. Per giustificare questo comportamento, gli animali sfavoriti devono essere considerati inferiori, indegni di un attaccamento affettivo. Se dovesse sorgere il dubbio che anche gli animali sfruttati abbiano un certo valore proprio, nascerebbe un conflitto irrisolvibile. Un modo sicuro per evitare il sorgere di tale conflitto è tenere le due categorie di animali, privilegiati e sfruttati, in ambiti della nostra mente completamente separati.
