Tromperie des consommateurs sur la viande chevaline produite hors d’UE

Les enquêtes de Tierschutzbund Zürich (TSB) et d’Animal Welfare Foundation (AWF) démontrent depuis 2012 avec quelle cruauté les chevaux sont traités lors du transport, dans les centres de rassemblement et les abattoirs situés hors d’Union européenne. Depuis des années, les producteurs et importateurs de viande chevaline démentent toutes les preuves apportées par les ONG. Avec la plateforme marketing Respectful Life, l’industrie de la viande chevaline tente de redorer l’image de la viande produite hors d’UE. En collaboration avec l’université belge de Louvain, ils mènent des audits dont les résultats nient tout acte de maltraitance infligée aux chevaux. Et ceci bien que les dernières enquêtes des ONG et les audits de l’UE menés en Australie, en Amérique du Nord et en Amérique du Sud ont de nouveau révélé de graves problèmes en matière de protection animale et de sécurité des consommateurs.

Les enquêtes de TSB et AWF prouvent que les opérateurs des abattoirs manipulent les audits annoncés à l’avance : les chevaux blessés et amaigris sont cachés ou échangés contre des chevaux en bonne santé. Une fois les auditeurs partis, les maltraitances envers les chevaux reprennent. Plusieurs rapports d’audit de l’UE confirment également que les chevaux sont échangés ou écartés, juste avant les inspections.

La Commission européenne pourrait mettre un terme à ces importations, car les exigences de l’UE en matière de bien-être animal et de traçabilité ne sont pas respectées par les pays producteurs. Pourtant, à ce jour, l’UE a seulement suspendu les importations depuis le Mexique et le Brésil. Une coalition internationale d’associations de protection des animaux demande donc à la Commission européenne de stopper également les importations en provenance d’Argentine, d’Australie, du Canada et d’Uruguay. Mais sans pression de la part du public, la Commission va persister dans sa passivité. S’il vous plaît, aidez-nous à mettre la pression sur la Commission en soutenant notre pétition !
