PETA’s Strategy to Modernize Biomedical Research

This overview of the Research Modernization Deal, developed by PETA scientists, details a strategy to optimize our nation’s investment in biomedical research by ending funding for ineffective strategies (i.e., experiments on animals) and investing in research that’s relevant to humans. Such a strategy is urgently needed, considering that studies show that a staggering 90% of basic research, most of which involves animals, fails to lead to treatments for humans. Yet the biggest funder of research in the U.S., the National Institutes of Health, spends nearly half its annual budget on animal studies.
