Ghostnet Hunters: Defending Plemmirio’s Waters

As part of a larger Sea Shepherd effort to combat the problem of abandoned fishing gear, Sea Shepherd Italy has launched its Ghostnet Campaign to focus on known problem areas such as the Plemmirio Marine Protection Area in Siracusa, Italy.

In the Mediterranean, a staggering 10% of marine waste – approximately 4,000 tons – comes from discarded or lost fishing gear like nets, lines, pots, hooks, etc., each year.

The Ghostnet Campaign, with the help of dedicated volunteers, celebrated its first win by removing over four kilometers of harmful nets from the Plemmirio Marine Protected Area.
