Chicks are Shipped Through the Mail

Did you know around 20 million 24-72-hour-old live chicks are shipped through the postal service each year in the United States? They face harsh weather conditions, lack of food/water, and rough transport conditions. The birds are classified as “perishable goods”.

This is how many feed-stores and small farms receive chicks from hatcheries. And this is how many mail-order hatcheries ship live chicks.

Around 1% of chicks are estimated to die during transit or soon thereafter – that’s 200,000 birds.
