Bloodfarm Syntex, Argentina – behind walls the torture business continues

In Ayacucho, Argentina, the company Syntex SA keeps around 3.000 mares for the production of the hormone PMSG (pregnant mare serum gonadotropin). This hormone is extracted from the blood of pregnant mares and is used in intensive farming as booster for fertility and birth synchronisation, for example in European piglet productions. Blood is taken from the mares between day 40 and 120 of their gestation. Approximately 10 litres of blood per week, during eleven weeks. To make the business even more profitable, the foals are systematically aborted and the mares are impregnated twice a year. Around 5.000 abortions per year are the consequence. “This has nothing to do with a humane approach to the animal”, says professor Axel Wehrend from the Justus Liebig University in Giessen when commenting the videos recorded at Syntex blood farm.
